Via Vulture comes news that indie darling Greta Gerwig will star in a How I Met Your Mother spinoff titled, you guessed it, How I Met Your Dad.
The news has been met with puzzlement by some—why would Gerwig, a talented actor and writer from such films as the mumblecore Hannah Takes the Stairs and the recent Frances Ha, sell out and do something so square as a CBS sitcom? But after thinking about it for a while, this news makes perfect sense to me, and I welcome it.
For one, a sitcom is the closest that actors come to a reliable 9 to 5 job, and I can absolutely understand why something like that would appeal to Gerwig. Plus, just because she’s on a sitcom doesn’t mean she can’t keep doing film work—it certainly hasn’t stopped HIMYM star Jason Segel.
All those issues aside, I think Gerwig—who tends to play aimless adultolescent types who can’t find their way in grownup life—is a perfect fit for this kind of project. HIMYM, in its heyday, was a kind of millennial Friends: a comedy exploring the extended adolescence that many millennials found themselves forced into by the recession and the increasing delay of the hallmarks of adulthood, like stable careers, marriage, children, and home ownership. Gerwig seems like a perfect fit to comment on this cultural phenomenon, since she’s done it so ably before.
I’m also cheered by the news that she’ll be a writer and producer for the show, and hopeful that Gerwig is smart enough, and will have enough influence on the show, to avoid the pitfalls that have made HIMYM struggle in its late run: mostly, an endless deferment of the promise of the show’s title, and structural gimmicks that are too cute by half and generally unfunny.
In other words, I’m hoping that Gerwig can make HIMYD better than HIMYM, which to me has become the TV show that has most squandered its early promise since Lost. Greta, don’t let me down!
This is surprising news! I love Gerwig, I think she is so wonderful. And I agree with you completely, HIMYM started so strong and then just totally devolved into a sitcom nightmare. The fact that the final season is entirely centered around Robin and Barney’s wedding is making me INSANE. The only character that should merit an entire season about their wedding is Ted. It’s his story!
