Here we go! Today’s the first day of the inaugural Stake Reading Club. This week, we’ll be focusing on books 1-4 of Monica Byrne’s The Girl in the Road. We’ll have a few posts about our initial reactions to the book later this week—in the meantime, start your reading!
As you read, please send us your thoughts, questions for us or Monica, and theories for discussion. You can add comments here on the blog, post your thoughts to our Facebook wall, or tweet at us with the hashtag #thegirlintheroad.

My first observation of the book (15 pages in) is that whoa there’s gonna be references. Gotta be on our toes to keep up with what’s bleeding off the edges of the page.
First reaction: thought about googling words, people names, and various objects that I don’t recognize to try an distinguish between what is a creation of the book’s world an what is a reference that as Chris alluded to, bleeds off the page. Decided to hold off, enjoy the world and the story, and see how much I can figure out on my own before going back later and trying to devine the literary and political allusions. Hope that is an ok approach.
I also held off on googling words. Everything starts to fall together. As Meena says, “My body is learning.”
