Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth remains one of the greatest cinematic fairytales of our day. His interpretation of the Hellboy comic antihero is nothing short of fantastic. del Toro, as was demonstrated in his recent exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, is truly “At Home With Monsters,” but, as the whimsical and dark new trailer for his film The Shape of Water reminds us, del Toro is also very much at home with matters of the human spirit. Featuring the brilliant Sally Hawkins as a mute custodian in Cold War America who falls in love with an Abe Sapien-type water critter played by genius del Toro mainstay Doug Jones, this movie looks like its ready to put del Toro’s best cinematic qualities on display.
The Shape of Water trailer
del Toro kind of fell short with the bombastic Pacific Rim and the gothic Crimson Peak, but, it looks like he is back on track to bring audiences a Pan’s Labyrinth-esque morality fable of pure enchantment and wonder.
